Rocky Mountain Animal Defense would like to take this time to recognize a tireless defender of animals both big and small – Pam Wanek of Prairie Preserves.
Pam stepped into take over a long-running prairie dog relocation site in Colorado Springs. The work was originally slated for completion two years ago when plague hit the relocation site, which was very difficult to secure in the first place. As if there aren’t enough obstacles working against advocates working to save the imperiled black tailed prairie dogs in Colorado, here was yet another one to deal with.
After RMAD staff dealt with some of the largest bureaucracies in the country to secure permission to move the prairie dogs within the county (state law makes it all but impossible to move prairie dogs across county line), Pam worked beyond the means of our modest budget to move the prairie dogs. This involves not only capturing, caring for, and moving the animals, but also recreating their burrows in their new location and carefully introducing them to their new homes. Fortunately, once the process was in place Pam found some new friends in Colorado Springs to work with, and Pam was able to move all but eight of the prairie dogs out of the danger zone and into a safe haven.

(Pam Wanek, far right, with relocation helpers)
We’re hoping we’ll find some land to move the remaining prairie dogs to (if you know anyone in Colorado Springs who might share their land with native wildlife, please let us know!). In the meantime, the other animals are breathing a sigh of relief in their new location, away from traffic and out of the path of impending construction.

(Introducing a black tailed prairie dog into his new home)
Here’s to Pam Wanek for all her work on behalf of our native wildlife! And here’s to you for advocating for our wildlife and supporting our work. If you’d like to make a donation to help offset the cost of this relocation, please follow this link, and feel free to contact the RMAD staff with any questions.
Have a great leap year day and a great weekend.
