Thanks to the diligent efforts of indefatigable Forest Guardians Deserts & Grasslands Program Director Lauren McCain, Ph.D., a joint petition has been filed to the U.S Department of the Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to list the black-tailed prairie dog as threatened or endangered. The petition, represented by four groups (Forest Guardians, Rocky Mountain Animal Defense, the Biodiversity Conservation Alliance and the Center for Native Ecosystems), was filed August 1 with the goal of bringing in new information gathered since the 2004 finding.
The request comes on the heels of a February lawsuit filed by the groups, challenging the 2004 determination by the USFWS that the black-tailed prairie dog does not warrant Endangered Species Act protection. The petition documents flaws in the 2004 USFWS decision, as well as information showing that threats to the black-tail have increased over the past several years. Thanks, Lauren!
The RMAD Action Committee has begun strategizing upcoming demonstrations, outreach and actions. We brainstormed a number of great ideas for future events, beginning with the October visit of the Ringling Bros. circus. The group will now be moving into the planning stages, so if you’d like to participate please contact Lynne Sprague.
Animal advocate Karen Norback is offering a portion of sales from her online business, Zoe Designs, to RMAD. Check out her fantastic handmade accessories at http://www.zoesbagboutique.com and http://zoesbagboutique.etsy.com.
Karen says: “My love for animals is reflected in my line of Zoe Designs cruelty-free accessories. Many of the fabrics I use feature animal designs. I also use varied types of faux fur and faux leather. I try to make most of my products as one-of-a-kind, unique pieces. Buy any of my products and I will donate 10 percent of the purchase price to RMAD, under your name. Let me know, when you pay, that you are an RMAD supporter and I will take care of your donation.”
If you’re an artist or designer, don’t forget to enter the RMAD T-Shirt Design Contest . We’ve extended the deadline to November 31, so there’s plenty of time to figure out how to combine your artistic talent and advocacy work. More information, deadline and rules can be found here. If you have any questions, please email us. We look forward to seeing your entries.
Thanks for reading. SEE YOU AT THE PIE PARTY!! |
