RMAD introduces the WatchDog

There is a lot of work to do to protect dogs and puppies.

In the past several issues of RMAD eNews, you’ve read about animal advocates taking action for dogs and puppies. People regularly protest in front of Longmont ’s PetSpot and have helped the city get better oriented toward animal protection.

People in Castle Rock have also held several demonstrations, undoubtedly leading to Jessie’s Pet Paradise being shut down for several violations. Yipee!!

What more can be done? PLENTY.

Sunday, 12/14, Humane Society of the US (HSUS) and RMAD are hosting a meeting about dog and puppy protection. Topics to be covered include updates on the pet store protests; PACFA (Colorado ’s regulatory agency) – what’s good, what needs to be better; the Legislature and how it can help; and more.

The meeting starts at 3:30 sharp at the Longmont Humane Society, 9595 Nelson Road.

Please RSVP (click here).

If you can’t make it, keep in touch through the WatchDog list (see below).

Before the Sunday meeting, join the weekly demo in Longmont in front of PetSpot.

When: Sun, Dec 14th, noon to 3 p.m.

Where: The Pet Spot, 900 S Hover Rd , Longmont

Details: Contact Jackie with questions.

There is also a demo THIS Sun, 12/7; please come!

Join other activists to protest the cruelty of puppy mills. All demos are peaceful, non-violent events. Stand up for the animals!

Saturday, 12/20 is a national rally against pet shops that use puppy mills. Do you have a pet shop that needs some attention? Contact RMAD for help getting the word out and for more information on this event.

Urge Petland to stop selling puppy mill puppies. HSUS’s eight-month investigation reveals that many stores across the country are marketing puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting consumers. Send a message, click here.

Turkey-Free Thursday is a Hit!

There were over 100 folks eating ANYTHING THEY WANTED TO! “I have not eaten this well in years! enthused one happy TFTer and long-time vegan. Where else do you can skip cooking and not have to pick through meat-ladened Thanksgiving offerings? Five animal groups were there with outreach info, there was lovely piano playing and a lively Silent Auction…thanks to all of the volunteers and to Govinda’s Buffet & Catering for making this one fantastic party. This tasty RMAD event got notice in the Loveland Reporter Herald, Rocky Mountain News, the Denver Examiner and Westword.

Fur Free Friday Successful

The day after Turkey-Free Thursday was Fur Free Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. The Coalition for Fur Free Colorado (RMAD is a charter member) organized a creative approach for stores that still sell fur. Early that day, two of us planned to peacefully approach store managers in the Cherry Creek Mall with an informational letter and DVD. An hour later, demonstrators planned to walk through the mall to emphasize our support for stores that are fur-free.

Best plans don’t always bear fruit! After handing the letter and DVD to the manager at Nordstrom’s, mall security approached and said we were not allowed to give anything unsolicited to any store manager. Well, ok…

But what about the folks planning to walk peacefully through the mall? There were about 50 of us ready to go! After a solid hour and many conversations with mall security, our lawyer, etc, we decided it best to stay outside. We also marched to the three nearby fur stores (soon to be two -- one is going out of business!) for more outreach.

As you may know, Fur Free Friday demonstrations have been occurring for many years. This time, the Denver “vibe” felt very positive with only one drive-by negative hoot. We received a LOT of positive horn toots of encouragement and we handed out hundreds of flyers about animal compassion. Plan on being at FFF next year!

More Channel 9 Fur News

As you may recall from past issues of RMAD eNews, Channel 9’s website was running fur advertisements. These have come down because activists contacted the station.

The News gets even better! On 9 News recently, Kathy Sabine had faux fur trim on her coat and she said, "at 9 News, we only wear faux fur" and then she mentioned that it is very important to bring your pets in on cold nights, like tonight, and make sure their water is fresh, not frozen.  She also mentioned that, after all, they are part of the family.  If you have a chance, email or call the station to commend her for her comments!  Every little bit helps...

The latest question for Ryan Andrews, professional nutritionist, RMAD Board President and all-around nice guy:

”After being veg or vegan for a few years, do people commonly get sick from eating meat-tainted vegan foods such as from a greasy grill?  Is this illness a threat or just indigestion? How can it be avoided?”
