December 21, 2007

After today, the sun begins its long return and the days will lengthen in duration. That’s good news, because things are really rocking and rolling in the RMAD office and we need all the daylight we can get.

But first, if you haven’t made your year-end donation, please do so today. A successful 2008 won’t happen without your support, and it’s been a tough year for nonprofits. For us to continue to make a difference for animals, people and planet, we need your support!

We’ve got lots of cool projects in the works, including a new feature on VegColorado.com: Ask Ryan! Expert Nutritional Advice . Ryan Andrews is local vegan dietician, fitness instructor, conditioning specialist and more. RMADers have been providing him with questions about health and fitness, and Ryan’s answers are not only very helpful and practical, they’re witty, creative and funny. If you’ve got a question for Ryan, submit it here . We’ll post Ryan’s answers every two weeks. Check out this week’s edition: Ask Ryan!

There’s a lot of activity right now with prairie dog colonies, and it’s hard for us to keep up with it all. Please use PrairieWatch to document any and all activity you know about—destruction, preservation, signs being posted, mysterious disappearances, etc. Understanding a colony’s history is very important for long-term advocacy, both in knowing what occurred and who was involved (on both sides of the issues).

How does it work?

1. Go to www.PrairieWatch.org
2. Log in so you’ll be able to leave comments (“chatter”)
3. Go to maps, find the location of the colony, click to enter data and comments
4. Update your entries with any changes in the status your of colony or colonies
5. Be sure to inform us of any glitches or suggestions

RMAD’s Letter Writing Team has been actively writing letters and engaging others in dialogue about the nature of institutionalized cruelty to animals in the U.S. and beyond, and we’re always looking for more team members. The “letters to the editor” sections are the among the most-read part of the newspaper, making this one of the most effective ways to get the AR message across. To join, simply drop us a line and we’ll get you started.

RMAD’s Nalgene Boycottgreen The campaign was recently featured in Canada’s This magazine , and New Hampshire’s Philips Exeter Academy recently purchased 250 stickers for their students.

If you’ve yet to finish your holiday shopping, consider some of our fine local establishments for cruelty-free goods: a gift certificate or baked goods from WaterCourse Foods , 100% vegan shoes from Ahimsa Footwear , or a massage from local vegan CMT Bricks Avalon . Be sure to tell them RMAD sent you.

And finally, we’ll be taking a breather next week. If you have an emergency, e-mail is best, but we’ll check phone messages regularly as well. Have safe and happy holidays, and see you in 2008!
