Prairie Dog program on CATV Boulder Community Television (TONIGHT!)

Sunday December 12, 2004 at 7 p.m. and then every Sunday for the following four weeks

"It takes a village" - a prairie dog village that is!

Independent CATV Producer Lib Lemah interviews prairie Dog and animal activists Jill Bielawski and Deb Jones. Jill and Deb educate us on the importance of the prairie dog to our environment and dispel many negative myths about the prairie dog.

The show was filmed in the middle of a large Boulder prairie dog colony. The little creatures are both amusing and amazing. They have social and communicative abilities far beyond what most people imagine.

Learn a little more about one of Colorado's oldest resident populations, the prairie dog.

The show is presented as part of the series "Colorado Road Rage" visiting unusual and interesting sites around Colorado.

Wildlife Habitat In Jeopardy

RMAD members continue to work to protect the wildlife habitat and prairie dog colony at 28th and Jay Road in Boulder.

The property owner, Palmos Development, wants to build a large "big-box" development there. But first, they must convince the city to re-zone and annex this county property. Therefore, it is not a sure-thing.

The city has to be convinced it's "needed." We believe it's not needed, and will be extremely detrimental as well.

On Dec. 2, RMAD activists spoke to Boulder City Council against the development, but a large number of people spoke in favor of the development, apathetic to the destruction of wildlife and habitat that developing the area will cause.

RMAD objects to:

  • Habitat and Wildlife Destruction
  • Urban Sprawl
  • Excessive Traffic on 28th street
  • Over development in a residential area
  • Development where there is no compelling and immediate community need

There will be a Boulder City Council Meeting on Monday Dec. 6, although it does NOT appear that Council will be discussing or voting regarding the land.

Letters are very much needed on this issue. For a sample letter and council members' addresses, see below.

**************************
Dear Council members:

I am very concerned about the possibility of "extending the urban growth boundary" in North Boulder, North of Jay and 28th. There is a lack of water at that site for further development, and the property is host to a large prairie dog
colony.

Palmos Construction has already killed thousands of Colorado's prairie dogs with developments. I am a resident of Boulder and do not want to see that happen here. I am sure many people in Boulder would agree with me.

I have other concerns as well, including water use, traffic and whether Boulder wants a shopping center in that location. As I drive around town I see several vacant buildings at this time. I would rather see a shopping area placed in a location that would not need to "extend the urban growth boundary.

Thank you for considering this important matter.

Sincerely,

Library Display

RMAD members Lynee Zajac, Ann Swissdorf, Eryn Swissdorf and Sarah Zellmer put together this great library display of vegan foods for the Arvada Library public display. If your library has a display like this, please fill it with veggies! Ask your librarian for details and contact us for help in filling it up!

Spare Change?

Here's your chance to create lasting change with your spare change:

Compassion Over Killing (http://www.cok.net) will air ads promoting vegetarianism in our community on MTV for only $25 per ad. These ads have the potential to reach thousands of people—including students home on holiday break. When C.O.K. has aired these ads in the past, the visits to their TryVeg.com website have gone up substantially. And for every person who sees the ads and chooses vegetarianism, 100 animals (and an acre of trees, 1.3 million gallons of water, etc.) will be saved per year!

If you'd like to view the ads, check out: http://www.cok.net/feat/commercials.php

Barbara Bear is looking for places in Boulder to collect spare change for these adds. More details when we have some spots. Alternately, you can take your coins to a bank yourself and then mail a check made out to C.O.K. to Barbara at:

Boulder, CO 80306

RMAD Events:

The RMAD Calendar (http://rmad.org/calendar.html) is full of great events coming up and all summer long! Work parties, fairs, meetings, and more. These events are great ways to get involved with RMAD and helping animals in the Rocky Mountain Region.

Activist Support Group (Tue, Dec 14)

Rocky Mountain Animal Defense and National Endowment for the Animals are building an "Activist Support Group" tentatively called the "Compassion Club". If you're interested, please read on and then RSVP to mattbear@neaforever.org (only if you'll be attending).

How do we keep on keepin' on throughout the years? Well, we don't have all the answers, but we know some of what works for us. And we're hoping to learn more about what works for you. Let's help one another.

Please join us in this hopeful experiment. We'll meet and talk and learn from each other. We're not sure how often we'll be meeting yet, but this is the perfect opportunity to help decide what we need and where we'll grow.

The meeting will be facilitated by our good friend Alisa Yablonski, a wonderful Life Coach -- http://www.YellowTurtle.org.

If you'll be attending, please RSVP to mattbear@neaforever.org so we can know who to expect.

Thank you!
