RMAD Events: Ongoing:
RMAD members continue to work to protect the wildlife habitat and prairie dog colony at 28th and Jay Road in Boulder. The property owner, Palmos Development, wants to build a large "big-box" development there. But first, they must convince the city to re-zone and annex this county property. Therefore, it is not a sure-thing. The city has to be convinced it's "needed." We believe it's not needed, and will be extremely detrimental as well. On Dec. 2, RMAD activists spoke to Boulder City Council against the development, but a large number of people spoke in favor of the development, apathetic to the destruction of wildlife and habitat that developing the area
will cause.
There will be a Boulder City Council Meeting on Monday Dec. 6, although it does NOT appear that Council will be discussing or voting regarding the land. Letters are very much needed on this issue. For a sample letter and council members' addresses, see below. ************************** I am very concerned about the possibility of "extending the urban growth boundary" in North Boulder, North of Jay and 28th. There is a lack of water at that site for further development, and the property is host to a large prairie dog Palmos Construction has already killed thousands of Colorado's prairie dogs with developments. I am a resident of Boulder and do not want to see that happen here. I am sure many people in Boulder would agree with me. I have other concerns as well, including water use, traffic and whether Boulder wants a shopping center in that location. As I drive around town I see several vacant buildings at this time. I would rather see a shopping area placed in a location that would not need to "extend the urban growth boundary. Thank you for considering this important matter. Sincerely, Name Please send letters to: Boulder City Council Contact Information For Council Members Thanks to the 50 or so people who showed up at our party last night! We had a great time, ate wonderful vegan food, met a lot of very nice people and raised about $500 for RMAD's continuing work. Where else can you have appetizers, hear wonderful live music, eat a 3 course vegan gourmet dinner, drink beer and wine, and dance; all for $10 a person? An RMAD event, that's where! ;-) We'll try to do more of these when we can find a space and someone to help put it together (it's a lot of work!). Don't miss out next time! From Rita Anderson about the Monkeys being imprisoned at CU: The following article about animal research at the CU Health Sciences Center in Denver appears in today's Boulder Daily Camera. Now it's finally out that CU did have an exit strategy (that was not followed) in place for the monkeys used in Mark Laudenslager's maternal separation experiments, Dr. Sladek has tried to breed monkeys in order to SELL their embryos for money (NOT for research), Sladek has now stacked the membership deck of the IACUC, and on and on and on. Please thank Clay Evans for this excellent expose: evansc@dailycamera.com

More information about the CU34 Here's your chance to create lasting change with your spare change: Compassion Over Killing (http://www.cok.net) will air ads promoting vegetarianism
in our community on MTV for only $25 per ad. These ads have the potential
to reach thousands of people—including students home on holiday break. When
C.O.K. has aired these ads in the past, the visits to their TryVeg.com website have gone up substantially. And for every person who sees the ads and chooses vegetarianism, 100 animals (and an acre of trees, 1.3 million gallons of water, etc.) will be saved per year! Barbara Bear is looking for places in Boulder to collect spare change for these adds. More details when we have some spots. Alternately, you can take your coins to a bank yourself and then mail a check made out to C.O.K. to Barbara at:
Barbara Bear Although it may not seem like it sometimes, good things do happen in the animal rights movement! RMAD has a page on our website dedicated to Good News! Check it out sometime, and if you have something good to report, please mail it to our Good News coordinator, Ruth, at: ruthb@rmad.org. Do you have an ink jet printer? If you do, you probably have empty ink cartridges lying around, right? Well we can use them! The local Office Max will give us a free ream of recycled paper for our empty cartridges! We can use that paper in our office for all the work we do! Of course, we try to stay paperless and avoid waste (and we always buy recycled paper), but sometimes we just have to print things. If you have a cartridge or two you'd like to donate, please email Chris (chrisj@rmad.org) to arrange a drop off. If you're not close by, feel free to put em in a box or envelope and send em our way: RMAD Thanks!
The RMAD Calendar (http://rmad.org/calendar.html) is full of great events coming up and all summer long! Work parties, fairs, meetings, and more. These events are great ways to get involved with RMAD and helping animals in the Rocky Mountain Region. The "National Western" (aka, Stock Show), returns to Denver January 8-23. We'll be there to educate people on the cruel, miserable lives the animals on factory farms endure. Details TBD, watch this space! Mark your calendars! January 25th is our second annual 'Dining Out Day" for RMAD. Once again, we'll be at the fabulous WaterCourse Foods in Denver. More details as it gets closer...
